Our 6 closest Spanish friends; Ruben, Lola, Miguel Angel, Rocio, Fernando and Marcos turned up one after the other at the poor excuse for a bus stop in Valverde; each appearance made my heart wrench just that little more until I was overcome with both happiness and sadness. Happiness because stood by my side saying their goodbyes at 10pm at night were 6 people who had become true, loving amigos over the year. These people have all taught me so much about their culture, language and have highlighted the fact that in life; it's the PEOPLE and not the place that makes you happy. I also felt an element of sadness because those people who became part of my daily life in Spain were suddenly waving me off on another adventure…but this time I wasn’t coming back.
Life is a very transient thing isn’t it? People come in and out of your life and influence you in some way. However, as Christen told me once 'Life goes forwards not backwards' and I believe this chapter in my life has been such a wonderfully written one that it would only spoil it to look back now wishing I was still there. So I'm going to put on a smile and look forward to the next chapter- for God always has surprises and countless blessings instore for us.
Saying goodbye to my private classes was difficult too; being their teacher and sometimes ‘older sister’ figure has been a real privilege these past 8 months. I have not only watched with pride as they've developped their level of English but also experienced that unequalled sense of love when you see your kids running towards you, reaching out and hugging you as you arrive on their doorstep to teach their weekly class. It made the 20 minute walk in the heat worth every droplet of sweat!! Here are some of my groups that have been such angels over the year:
